Samsung Just Teased Its Killer Oura Ring: The Galaxy Ring

Samsung is taking the natural step into a new category of wearable devices, one in which companies like Oura have made a mark. In the final minutes of its Unpacked event today, Samsung gave a brief look at its first smart ring.

Of course, the company calls it the Galaxy Ring. The teaser video showed off its minimalist design profile with a metallic exterior that curves slightly inwards and an interior lined with sensors on a glass-like base. Yes, it looks a lot like the Oura Ring.

There is nothing that stands out about the design as it looks like every other smart ring out there. Samsung didn’t say exactly when it plans to launch the smart ring, but it won’t be a surprise to see it appear at the upcoming Unpacked event in the second half of 2024.

At this time, there is no official information available about the Galaxy Ring, but rumors about its development have been circulating for a while now. Rumors on social media suggest it will feature a miniaturized photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor for heart rate assessment and possibly ECG analysis as well.

Samsung already offers the latter on its smartwatches, including the Galaxy Watch 6, so it won’t be a surprise to see the same on its first smartwatch. Other features that can safely be assumed to appear in its repertoire include sleep tracking, activity tracking, and (perhaps) also some form of remote control or music playback tricks.

According the electric, Samsung could offer the Galaxy Ring in four sizes. Given the state of the competition, it won’t be surprising to see Samsung’s smart ring start in the $300 ballpark.

Plus, if Samsung hopes to show off its tech and innovation acumen with some standout features, prepare for an equally higher starting price.
